The Reason For The Season: The Importance Of Writing Christmas From a Christian Perspective (Christmas Special)

Twas the Vibe before Christmas”

This Christmas season, our culture is surging with Christmas Music,

Decorations, Cookies, and Fun Family Tradition. ‘You better be good because

Santa Claus is watching’ or ‘#XMAS#.’ TikTok is bursting with Christmas Fit Checks, Christmas Vibes, Christmas Trends..

Everybody is ready for the season.

But in the business of it all, we tend to forget or even let it slip the real reason for this wonderful season. How many times have you seen #XMAS and not stopped to think about how they’ve removed the CHRIST from CHRISTMAS? Or how many times have you seen statues or figurines of Santa Claus and forgotten that Saint Nicholas was a real, Christian man who is no longer remembered for his kindness to the poor.. instead, he’s some kind of ‘divine being’ who is always watching and who provides you with your gifts if you are good. Like some twisted way of discarding Jesus and replacing him with Santa on the day he came down to our wicked world to save us. Not some jolly fat fellow, but a real Son of God who was willing to humble himself, come down, become a normal human baby, and grow up just to die a brutal death that was meant for us.

Let us not forget about his Sacrifice this season!

Why Write About Christmas?

So, we ask, what does this have to do with our writing?

Well, now that I have laid out how important it is for us to remember that Jesus is really the Reason for the Season, I want to make a point.

I would argue that we should not skip Christmas in our books. Because, guys, it is the biggest holiday of our year. We celebrate for a whole month, sometimes even two months. Every child, parent, and grandparent looks forward to it all year round. Not only that, but it’s also a great page filler as well if you are stuck and it fits well with your storyline.

But not everyone celebrates for the right reason, and that’s why it’s needed to show the importance of Jesus during Christmas and all year round through our books.

Application

Now, I know that this can be so hard for someone writing in a genre like fantasy, but I have seen it done. And you guys need to know that even if you are only writing the holiday to fill the page, it is SO important to put the real reason for the season into your holiday. We need to help put Christ back in Christmas!

If you don’t have any way to incorporate the holiday in your books, that’s okay!  But if you do have Christmas, or a holiday like Christmas, it’s really important to remember what Christmas is about. Don’t forget how important the advent is, how important God is to Christmas!

Christmas Movies nowadays are just a fluffy piece where they mention God twice, pray a couple times, and then spend the rest of the time talking about ‘Following your heart’ and ‘Magic’ and ‘Santa.’ Jeremiah 17:9 calls the heart "Deceitful above all things and beyond cure.”

If you are a Christian, your book needs to mention Christ. Because the Bible also says “So whether you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31) So if we write a book as a Christian, and nobody can even tell we are a Christian, how are we glorifying God in our writing?

So write well, authors.. and when you write about the Holidays, don’t forget who is ACTUALLY always watching and protecting you, and who is ACTUALLY the real reason why we celebrate Christmas and Advent today.
